In first explainer in the series, we discussed what the community economy is. In the second explainer, we dive into the role of cooperatives.
Because if we want to work towards an economy that serves the community, we must focus on cooperatives. After all, members of cooperatives hold joint ownership of businesses, homes, solar panels, digital technology, or, for example, shared cars.
The moment people from the community acquire ownership, they also gain ownership of a part of the local economy.
Something special happens in a cooperative: because there is shared ownership, shared decision-making occurs. This means that consultation is required, rather than one or a few people making the decisions. This creates the dynamic that cooperators talk and sit down together more often, making sure choices within a cooperative are more widely supported. In this way, the economy belongs to all of us, and the community is strengthened.
