Description
In our first explainer, we explored what the community economy is. In the second explainer, we dive into the role of cooperatives.
Because if we want to work towards an economy that serves the community, we must invest in cooperatives. Members of cooperatives hold collective ownership over businesses, housing, solar panels, digital technology, or shared cars, for example.
The moment people from the community hold ownership, they also gain ownership over a part of the local economy.
Something special happens in a cooperative: because there is shared ownership, shared decision-making also emerges. This means people must consult with one another, rather than one or two individuals making all the decisions. While this means coming together around the table more often, it also ensures that choices within a cooperative are supported more broadly. In this way, the economy becomes something for all of us, and the community is strengthened.
