The digital transformation of our societies and economies has a big impact on our lives and on the planet. The ad-tech driven business model of the largest tech companies is demanding an ever growing capacity in servers and cloud storage, leading to an enormous claim on our energy grids and an even bigger carbon footprint. New financial products like bitcoin and other crypto-assets have an exorbitant carbon footprint because the mining of these coins requires more energy than the total demand of a country like Spain. Meanwhile, the extractive and exploitative culture that the digital transformation of our societies and economies also promotes, is exacerbating a growth-fuelled consumerism and individualism that is antithetical to the caring and collaborative culture that is required to move society beyond growth. So we need different tech, that is designed to create wellbeing and regeneration and to foster collaborative practices. Can we envision a digital transition beyond growth?
